How a Tennessee Theme Park Evolved From Civil War Reenactments to Global Cultural Icon
In short: Dollywood began as a modest tourist attraction featuring steam trains and staged Civil War skirmishes. Today, it stands as the premier destination in Tennessee, blending Appalachian heritage with world-class engineering. Discover how Dolly Parton transformed a local railroad site into a sprawling, multi-generational resort rooted in her own childhood dreams.
The site of modern-day Dollywood has undergone several identities since its 1961 opening as Rebel Railroad. Initially owned by the Robbins brothers, the park leaned into a Civil War theme, complete with a steam locomotive and staged attacks by soldiers and train robbers. By 1964, it shifted to a Wild West theme as Goldrush Junction, before being acquired by Art Modell in 1970 and eventually the Herschend brothers in 1976. The Herschends rebranded the property as Silver Dollar City Tennessee, establishing it as a sister park to their Missouri location and investing $1 million in early upgrades.
The park's most significant transformation began in 1986, when Dolly Parton partnered with the Herschends to launch Dollywood. Parton, who grew up in the surrounding area, envisioned the park as a 'fairy Smoky Mountain'—a counterpart to Disneyland that celebrated the culture and history of East Tennessee. The park grew rapidly, doubling in size to 150 acres by 2010 and expanding its offerings to include a water park, a resort, and a dinner attraction. Its success is anchored by a commitment to regional identity, with themed areas exploring Appalachian life and Parton's personal history.
Engineering innovation has defined the park's later decades. From the 2007 debut of the Mystery Mine coaster to the 2016 launch of the world's first launched wooden coaster, Lightning Rod, Dollywood has consistently invested in record-breaking attractions. The 2019 opening of Wildwood Grove, a $37 million development, further solidified the park's status as a destination built from Parton's imagination. Today, the park is organized into 11 themed areas, serving as both a major regional employer with approximately 4,000 staff and a cultural hub that hosts millions of guests annually.
