In short: Founded in 1989, GamePro evolved from a small, home-based operation into a global media powerhouse. Beyond its iconic reviews and comic-book-style editorial avatars, the magazine’s leadership played a pivotal role in creating the Electronic Entertainment Expo, forever changing how the video game industry connects with its audience and business partners.

GamePro began in late 1988 when Patrick Ferrell, Leeanne McDermott, and the design team of Michael and Lynne Kavish started working out of their homes in the San Francisco Bay Area. By 1989, they secured a partnership with the global giant International Data Group (IDG) to sustain their growth. Under the leadership of Ferrell as president and CEO, the magazine grew into a profitable publication with a monthly circulation of 300,000, eventually moving its headquarters through various California cities before settling in Oakland.

The publication was known for its distinct personality, featuring editors who used comic-book avatars and monikers until a 2004 redesign. Its content was equally experimental; early issues included a superhero comic strip about a player saving a dimension from 'Evil Darklings.' Beyond the page, the team’s influence was profound. In 1993, Ferrell sent VP of marketing Debra Vernon to the Consumer Electronics Show, where they identified a need for a dedicated gaming event. This insight led to the launch of E3, the Electronic Entertainment Expo, which became one of the largest trade show launches in history.

As the industry shifted, GamePro attempted to pivot. In 2006, IDG began moving toward an 'Online to Print' strategy, leading to the creation of the Gamepro Media Network and sites like GamerHelp.com. Despite a 2010 editorial shift toward the culture of gaming under John Davison, the print landscape proved difficult. After 22 years, the monthly magazine ceased publication in October 2011. A final, short-lived quarterly edition was attempted before the brand officially shut down on December 5, 2011, with its remaining digital presence absorbed into PC World.
