The internet's most famous frown was actually a medical condition
In short: Grumpy Cat became a global icon of cynicism, but her signature scowl wasn't an attitude—it was biology. Born with feline dwarfism and a unique facial structure, Tardar Sauce lived a life that balanced high-fashion fame with the reality of being a regular cat who just happened to look perpetually annoyed.
The feline famous as Grumpy Cat originated from Morristown, Arizona, where Tardar Sauce emerged from parents of calico and blue-and-white tabby breeds. While her parents were normal-sized domestic short-hair cats, Tardar was born with feline dwarfism. This condition resulted in an undersized frame, different hind legs, a flat face, bubble eyes, and a short tail. Her iconic "grumpy" expression was specifically caused by an underbite, a physical trait that allowed her to become one of the most influential non-humans of the 2010s.
Despite her internet persona, her owners, Tabatha and Bryan Bundesen, noted that she was a regular cat ninety-nine percent of the time. Her fame exploded in September 2012 after a photo posted to Reddit sparked a wave of "Lolcat" parodies. This organic growth eventually turned into a massive commercial enterprise managed by Ben Lashes. By mid-2013, her brand was generating low-six-figure annual income, leading to official roles as the Friskies Spokescat and appearances on Good Morning America.
The Grumpy Cat brand demonstrated the power of intellectual property in the digital age. The estate successfully sued Grenade Beverage LLC in 2018 for trademark infringement over "Grumppuccino" coffee, winning $710,000 in damages. Beyond beverages, the brand expanded into a multi-media empire including a New York Times best-selling book, a Lifetime film starring Aubrey Plaza as the voice of Grumpy Cat, and even a stipple portrait by The Wall Street Journal.
Tardar Sauce lived until May 14, 2019, passing away at age 7 due to complications from a urinary tract infection. While her commercial footprint was vast—spanning trademarks, video games, and merchandise—her legacy remains rooted in the unique intersection of genetic rarity and internet culture.
