The evolution of Bugatti from quad-turbo W16s to high-revving V16s
In short: Bugatti is moving away from its signature 8.0-litre quad-turbo W16 engine for the new Tourbillon. This video explores the engineering shift toward a naturally aspirated, high-revving V16 developed in partnership with Cosworth.
The new Bugatti Tourbillon features an 8.3-litre V16 engine that reaches 9,000rpm, producing 986bhp and 664lb ft of torque. Unlike the previous W16 models found in the Veyron and Chiron, this unit is naturally aspirated—meaning it has no turbochargers. To reach its full power potential, it combines with three e-motors providing an additional 789bhp of electric assistance.
The engine was engineered by Cosworth, a British firm also responsible for the V12s in the Aston Martin Valkyrie and GMA T.50. The video provides a technical comparison between these engines and captures the unique acoustic profile of the Tourbillon's V16 at full throttle on a dynamometer.
