In short: While most sea lions remain tethered to the shoreline, the New Zealand sea lion behaves differently. To protect their young from predators and harsh weather, females lead their pups up to 2 kilometers inland, seeking refuge in tall grasses and dense forests—a unique terrestrial behavior among all pinnipeds.

This unique inland migration is a survival strategy. Female New Zealand sea lions move away from the beach to shield pups from male harassment, wind, storms, and parasitic infections. They are the only pinniped species known to disperse this far inland, showing a distinct preference for forest environments. However, as mainland populations have grown since the 1990s, this behavior has increasingly brought them into contact with human spaces, including backyards, golf courses, and even fish-and-chip shops.

The species' history is marked by significant population crashes. Once distributed across mainland New Zealand, they were nearly wiped out by human hunting between the 13th and 19th centuries. DNA evidence suggests that three distinct lineages once existed; one was wiped out by Māori settlers between 1300 and 1500 AD, and another was destroyed by Moriori predation at the Chatham Islands. The current population, estimated at fewer than 10,000 individuals, is primarily descended from a subantarctic lineage that filled the ecological niche left by these extinct groups.

Conservation efforts face complex hurdles. While the species was recently reclassified as "Nationally Vulnerable" in 2019, the Auckland Islands population—which accounts for nearly 80% of the species—faced a ~50% decline between 2000 and 2015. Factors include food limitation, where 58% of pups at Campbell Island died in their first month in 2015, and bacterial outbreaks like Klebsiella pneumoniae. Today, the species is slowly recolonizing the South and Stewart Islands, but they face new risks from vehicle strikes and domestic dogs as they return to the mainland.
