Preparing moose calves for a massive 268-mile journey into the wild
In short: Dr. Michelle Oakley, the Yukon's sole all-species veterinarian, oversees a critical mission. With only five days remaining, she must ensure moose calves are ready for a demanding 268-mile relocation across the Prince William Sound to establish their new lives in the wild.
Dr. Michelle Oakley operates as the only veterinarian serving an expansive region in the Yukon, managing diverse wildlife ranging from bison and bears to lynx and ibex. Her work often involves high-stakes interventions, such as performing surgeries or navigating harsh, frozen environments to facilitate animal rehabilitation.
In this specific operation, the focus shifts to the logistical challenge of moving moose calves. The animals face a significant 268-mile trek across the Prince William Sound, a journey that requires careful preparation to ensure their safety and successful transition into their new wild habitat.
