The Moose Detective: Solving a Forest Mystery on Öland
In short: When moose calves on the island of Öland began dying shortly after birth, authorities turned to a specialist investigator. This documentary follows a high-tech hunt for answers in Sweden's wilderness.
The film follows Fredrik, a 'moose detective,' as he uses helicopters and dart guns to investigate why calves are failing to survive. While climate change is a primary suspect, the investigation also explores other potential culprits like food shortages or a combination of both factors.
Beyond this specific mystery, the documentary highlights the moose's complex role in Sweden. They are vital for tourism and hunting but pose significant risks to forestry operations and road safety. The footage captures the tension between preserving these forest giants and managing human-wildlife conflict from the Arctic Circle to southern Sweden.
