The mouflon is a wild sheep that may be the ancestor of domestic flocks.
In short: Small, hardy, and distinctively marked, the mouflon is a wild sheep native to the Mediterranean and parts of Asia. While often confused with feral descendants, true mouflon are wild ruminants that offer a window into the origins of the billion-plus domesticated sheep that populate our modern world today.
The mouflon, classified as Ovis aries musimon in Corsica and Sardinia or Ovis aries ophion in Cyprus, is a small wild sheep standing about 70 cm at the shoulder. These animals are characterized by their brown coats, white underparts, and a distinctive light, saddle-shaped mark on their backs. Unlike their domesticated relatives, which have been bred into hundreds of varieties for specific wool or meat production, wild mouflon retain a coat of hair with a short, fine undercoat.
Domesticated sheep were first derived from wild ancestors at least 5000 bce, with remains appearing across early human settlements in the Middle East, Europe, and Central Asia. While modern sheep are raised for milk, meat, and fleece, they share the ruminant biology of their wild cousins. Both wild and domestic sheep possess four stomach compartments, allowing them to regurgitate and chew cud to digest coarse vegetation. However, domestic breeds have diverged significantly from their progenitors in size, conformation, and fleece quality.
The relationship between wild and domestic sheep is complex. While some populations, such as those on Mediterranean islands, are now considered feral descendants of domestic stock, other wild species remain distinct. Domestic sheep are generally stockier than their wild counterparts and lack the same protective instincts, having been bred for docility. Today, the global population of domestic sheep exceeds one billion, with major production hubs in countries like Australia, New Zealand, and China, highlighting the immense evolutionary shift from the wild, timid mouflon to the specialized breeds that support human agriculture.
