How a single species can undo centuries of environmental damage
In short: Watch how the reintroduction of beavers to England is fundamentally reshaping the landscape. This documentary explores why what looks like ecological chaos is actually a sophisticated process of restoration.
For centuries, beavers were absent from the English countryside. Recent conservation projects have reintroduced the Eurasian beaver (Castor fiber) to areas like the River Otter in Devon, where they are now actively transforming rivers, wetlands, and forests.
By constructing dams, beavers create complex wetland habitats that support a diverse array of life, including fish, birds, and insects. While their activity may seem disruptive initially, it serves as a natural mechanism to increase biodiversity and restore balance to environments altered by human activity.
