The hidden, parasitic life of the cactus mistletoe

Parasite in the Poo | The Green Planet | BBC Earth · 3:37 · Video: BBC Earth · Watch at the source

In short: Witness the secret world of plants through the eyes of Sir David Attenboorg. This footage uses specialist cameras to reveal how parasitic plants penetrate cacti to survive.

This programme examines how flora are linked, highlighting more than twenty years of recent findings. One remarkable example is the cactus mistletoe, a parasite that penetrates the surface of cacti to grow within, sustained by the host's water stores. After a year of feeding, its vibrant flowers erupt for pollination.

Using pioneering camera techniques that go beyond the power of the human eye, the series travels through deserts, tropical jungles, and underwater worlds to reveal the ingenious survival strategies plants use to endure their environments.
