The mystery of the yellow cloud guitar is finally solved

Custom-made in 1983 by Knut-Koupée Enterprises, a Minneapolis-based music shop, the guitar features a distinctive, fluid shape where the upper body curls into a wisp. Its fretboard is adorned with a repeating pattern of inlaid markers that merge the Roman symbols for Mars and Venus, representing a fusion of male and female energies.
While the guitar's appearance is legendary, its design lineage traces back to a 1972 bass guitar by Jeff Levin of Sardonyx Guitars. Prince was reportedly captivated by this bass after seeing it in a music store during a late 1970s tour. This inspiration led to the creation of the 'cloud' series. Although Knut-Koupée produced three such instruments in the early 1980s, evidence suggests this specific model was likely the very first cloud guitar ever built for the artist.
The history of the object is also a story of preservation and discovery. Although the guitar was originally painted white, it became an icon of the Purple Rain era. For years, the Smithsonian held the instrument without knowing its specific connection to the film. It was only through the dedicated research of conservator John Woodland and curators like John Troutman that the link to the 1984 cinematic climax was confirmed. This discovery highlights how even the most famous artifacts can hold secrets long after they enter a museum's care.
