A comprehensive overview of the diverse world of stingless bees
In short: Researchers have compiled a comprehensive review of stingless bees, a diverse group of bees found across the tropics. The study identifies 605 living species distributed across 45 different genera, while also documenting 18 extinct species. Beyond classification, the review highlights the unique nesting behaviors and architectural styles these bees use to build their homes.
This review serves as a vital resource for understanding the cultural and economic importance of stingless bees. It provides updated identification keys based on physical appearance and summarizes the biology of various genera.
The study is a systematic review of existing literature and fossil records. A limitation of this work is that it relies on currently described species and may not account for undiscovered biodiversity.
Why it matters: Understanding the diversity and nesting habits of stingless bees is crucial for conservation and cultural heritage.
