Complex rupture patterns in Turkey's 2023 earthquake doublet revealed by modeling
In short: Researchers using seismic and space-geodetic data found that the destructive 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquake doublet involved highly complex movements. By combining observations with dynamic modeling, the team discovered that the initial magnitude 7.8 earthquake consisted of three distinct slip episodes, while the subsequent magnitude 7.7 event featured a faster, supershear rupture on its western branch.
This study provides a detailed look at how massive earthquakes interact across multiple fault segments. By integrating physics-based models with observational data, the researchers demonstrated that unexpected rupture paths can be explained if the background stress in the Earth's crust is unevenly distributed.
The analysis relied on dynamic rupture modeling and kinematic inversions, which may be limited by the complexity of the fault systems involved.
Why it matters: Understanding fault interactions and background stress is vital for accurate seismic hazard assessments.
