In short: Researchers have developed a deep generative model that produces realistic, high-resolution precipitation forecasts. By analyzing radar data, this new method provides probabilistic predictions for rain events up to 90 minutes ahead, overcoming the common problem of blurry forecasts that often plague existing deep learning techniques during heavier rain events.

The study used a generative model to predict rain across large regions, such as 1,536 km by 1,280 km. To test its utility, the researchers conducted a systematic evaluation involving more than 50 expert meteorologists. While the model showed improved accuracy and consistency, the study focuses on short-term nowcasting rather than long-term weather prediction.

Why it matters: New generative AI techniques may help reduce the blurriness and inaccuracy of short-term rain forecasts.
