In short: Researchers analyzing satellite data from 2003 to 2020 found that the spatial extent of coastal algal blooms has increased by 13.2% globally. The study, which examined 153 coastal countries, also observed a 59.2% increase in the frequency of these blooms over the same period.

The study used global satellite observations at a 1-km resolution to map daily blooms. While the researchers identified a link between bloom trends and ocean circulation, as well as the stimulatory effects of rising sea surface temperatures, the findings are based on satellite-derived observations of surface phenomena.

Why it matters: Rising sea surface temperatures and changing ocean circulation are linked to the expanding footprint of coastal algal blooms.
