Human activities drive high nitrate levels in Rajasthan groundwater
In short: Researchers studying 90 groundwater samples in a semi-arid region of Rajasthan, India, found that most nitrate levels are influenced by human activities. The study observed that 93% of the samples exceeded natural background levels, with significant portions of the population facing potential health risks from nitrate exposure.
The study used a probabilistic approach to estimate a natural background nitrate level of 7.2 mg/L. While 28% of samples exceeded the permissible limit of 45 mg/L, the researchers found that oral exposure poses a much higher risk than skin contact. However, the findings are limited to this specific semi-arid region and focus on estimated health indices.
Why it matters: High nitrate levels from human activity in this region create measurable health risks, especially for children.
