In short: Researchers analyzing monthly groundwater-level data across hundreds of basins in Iran found that human water use appears to be the main factor behind the country's groundwater losses. Studying data from 2002 to 2015, they estimated that Iran lost about 74 cubic kilometers of groundwater during this period, with natural drought acting mainly as a trigger that intensifies the decline.

The study found that while natural droughts can trigger and speed up water loss, large-scale depletion across Iran's basins is mainly linked to extensive human withdrawals. This pattern is associated with extreme overdrafts in about 77% of the country's land area.

The researchers quantified these changes using publicly available monthly groundwater-level data from 478 sub-basins and 30 basins. Because the study is observational, relying on existing datasets rather than controlled experiments, it can show association but not prove that human withdrawals are the sole cause.

Why it matters: Iran's groundwater crisis appears to be driven mainly by human water use, not just natural drought.
