Increasing water scarcity is limiting vegetation growth across the Northern Hemisphere
In short: Researchers analyzing three decades of environmental data found that water constraints on vegetation growth have significantly increased between 1982 and 2015. By studying the extratropical Northern Hemisphere, the team observed that areas experiencing water deficits are expanding, while regions with water surpluses are shrinking.
The study attributed these shifting patterns to changes in temperature, precipitation, solar radiation, and atmospheric CO2. These findings suggest that plants may be becoming more susceptible to drought as the response time to water scarcity decreases.
Why it matters: Rising water scarcity and shrinking water surpluses are making vegetation more vulnerable to drought.
