Key barriers and training needs for agricultural extension agents in northeastern Ghana
In short: A study of 32 agricultural extension agents in northeastern Ghana found that while radio and television are primary sources of climate information, significant hurdles remain for effective climate adaptation. Researchers identified critical gaps in technical skills, communication, and access to digital tools needed to support smallholder farmers.
Using a mixed-methods approach involving stakeholder workshops, expert interviews, and surveys, the study highlighted that lack of transportation, insufficient funds, and high agent-to-farmer ratios hinder service delivery. It also noted that farmer resistance and complex land tenure can limit the impact of adaptation efforts. However, the small sample size of agents may limit the generalizability of these findings.
The research provides a roadmap for strengthening agricultural resilience by emphasizing the need for periodic capacity building and improved ICT integration.
Why it matters: Strengthening climate adaptation requires addressing both the technical training needs of agents and the structural resource shortages they face.
