A more precise global model for tracking tectonic plate movements
In short: Researchers analyzing 1,122 data points from 22 plate boundaries have developed NUVEL-1, a new model describing how Earth's plates move. By synthesizing spreading rates, transform fault directions, and earthquake slip vectors, the team created a global motion model that significantly reduces errors in plate velocity estimates compared to previous studies.
This model provides a more consistent view of tectonic activity, particularly by correcting systematic errors in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. The researchers derived the model by inverting geological data and comparing observed magnetic profiles with synthetic anomalies. However, the model treats plates as rigid bodies and may encounter inaccuracies where convergence is oblique.
Why it matters: A new global model significantly improves the precision of tectonic plate velocity estimates across the oceans.
