A predator returns to the canals of a densely populated nation
In short: The Eurasian otter was once driven to local extinction in the Netherlands. This documentary captures their secret life as they reclaim urban waterways, navigating a landscape of heavy traffic and human infrastructure.
Following a 1988 disappearance from Dutch waters caused by hunting, pollution, and habitat loss, the Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) is reappearing. This recovery is the result of decades of conservation efforts, allowing the species to expand into new territories.
The film provides rare footage of these elusive predators, documenting their hunting behaviors and social interactions. It highlights a modern paradox: while they are successfully adapting to human-dominated environments, they face a constant threat from one of the world's densest road networks, where traffic remains a leading cause of mortality.
