The garden inhabitant that is actually a land-dwelling shrimp
In short: Commonly known as pill bugs, doodle bugs, or potato bugs, these armored creatures are far more than mere garden pests. Despite their insect-like appearance, they belong to a completely different lineage, having transitioned from ancient marine ancestors to conquer the terrestrial world millions of years ago.
While they may resemble insects like crickets or butterflies, pill bugs are actually terrestrial crustaceans. Their evolutionary history is deeply rooted in the ocean; their ancestors were marine organisms that moved onto dry land millions of years ago. This biological connection is so strong that they are more closely related to lobsters and shrimp than to true insects. In fact, their flavor is often described as similar to other crustaceans, which has even earned them the nickname "wood shrimp."
However, being a land-dwelling crustacean comes with significant physiological challenges. Jonathan Wright, a biology professor at Pomona College, notes that the evidence of this marine heritage is hidden beneath their shells. Because they possess pleopod gills, their ability to breathe has shifted over time. While these structures are now highly efficient at extracting oxygen from the air, they have become less effective at extracting it from water. Consequently, most pill bugs face the risk of drowning if they remain submerged for just a few hours.
To survive in unpredictable environments, these creatures have developed specialized behaviors. They utilize a process called conglobation, where they roll into a tight, armored ball. This serves a dual purpose: it acts as a defense mechanism against predators and prevents the animal from desiccating when moisture is scarce. Their diet is equally specialized, consisting primarily of decaying plant matter, though they will also consume algae, lichens, and fungi. While some adventurous foragers have attempted to eat them, the experience is often marred by the high amount of soil found within their digestive tracts.
