DNA traces reveal a hidden world of ocean giants
In short: We often imagine the deep ocean as a void, but it is actually home to real-life monsters. From car-sized crabs to colossal squids, these giants thrive in extreme depths. Recent breakthroughs are finally allowing us to map this secret wilderness without ever having to see the creatures themselves.
In a significant leap for marine biology, researchers have begun mapping the biodiversity of deep underwater canyons using environmental DNA (eDNA). By analyzing genetic traces naturally released into the seawater, scientists can identify species that are otherwise elusive or rarely seen. This technique allowed a team to identify 226 different species across 11 major animal groups in submarine canyons off Western Australia, including many that were previously unknown to science.
One of the most notable discoveries from this research was evidence of the giant squid (Architeuthis dux). These mysterious cephalopods can reach lengths of 10 to 13 meters—longer than a school bus—and possess eyes up to 30 centimeters across, which are among the largest in the animal kingdom. The study detected their presence in six separate samples taken from depths exceeding 4 kilometers, providing a rare glimpse into their habitat.
The expedition explored the Cape Range and Cloates submarine canyons, located approximately 1200 kilometers north of Perth. By collecting over 1,000 samples from depths as great as 4510 meters, the team identified a diverse array of life, including deep-diving mammals like the Pygmy sperm whale and Cuvier's beaked whale. These findings underscore how much of our planet's oceans remain unexplored, proving that even in the most extreme environments, life finds a way to flourish.
While finding evidence of legendary creatures like the giant squid captures public imagination, scientists emphasize that these are just pieces of a much larger puzzle. The sheer variety of species found—ranging from sleeper sharks to faceless cusk eels—highlights the necessity of continued exploration into the deep-sea environments that still hold so many mysteries.
