In short: A sea breeze is more than a cooling relief on a hot day. It is a localized weather system driven by the unequal heating of land and water. This daily thermal cycle creates moving fronts, triggers intense thunderstorms, and even shapes the design of modern nearshore wind farms.

The fundamental mechanism behind a sea breeze is the difference in heat capacity between land and water. Because land warms much faster than the ocean under solar radiation, the air above the coast heats up and rises. This creates a pressure gradient that draws cooler, denser air from the sea toward the land. This cycle typically reaches a vertical depth of 1 to 2 kilometers and can penetrate 10 to 100 kilometers inland.

When this cool marine air meets warmer air over land, it forms a sea-breeze front. This boundary acts like a shallow cold front, forcing warm air upward. If the atmosphere is sufficiently humid and unstable, this process can trigger severe thunderstorms. In places like Florida, these fronts are so potent that they make the peninsula one of the most lightning-struck regions on Earth. On calm days, sea breezes from opposite coasts can even collide in the center of the state, resulting in intense storm activity.

While the sea breeze is a daytime phenomenon driven by convection, the cycle reverses at night as the land cools faster than the water. This creates a land breeze, which is generally shallower than its daytime counterpart. These localized winds are not always benign; in southeast Australia, the 'southerly buster' is an intense, squally sea breeze that can cause temperatures to drop by 10 to 15 °C in just a few minutes. Understanding these fluctuations is increasingly practical, as nearshore wind farms are specifically positioned to harness the energy of these daily coastal wind cycles.
