A mirror of human tragedy in the volcanic peaks of Virunga
In short: This video explores the precarious existence of mountain gorillas as their habitat shrinks due to regional instability. It follows two brothers, Luawa and Rafiki, as they transition from grieving a fallen leader to becoming the protectors of their troop.
The narrative highlights the intersection between human conflict and wildlife preservation in Zaire. As hundreds of thousands of refugees move toward lava fields, the forest home of the silverback is rapidly disappearing.
The footage captures intimate moments of gorilla life—such as a mother comforting a snared infant—contrasted with the violent reality of poachers using AK-47s to hunt these primates. It serves as a testament to the critical need for cooperation between humans and our closest relatives to ensure their survival.
