A river predator that leaps from water to hunt birds on land

In short: In southwestern France, a predator is breaking the rules of biology. Along the banks of the Tarn River, the European catfish has developed a daring new hunting strategy: leaping entirely out of the water to snatch unsuspecting pigeons from the gravelly shore.

In the natural world, categories are often clean: fish eat fish, and land animals stay on land. However, nature frequently defies these distinctions at the edges. Along the river Tarn in southwestern France, the European catfish has become a notable exception to the rule, targeting pigeons that gather on small gravel banks at the water's edge. This unexpected behaviour highlights how life often ignores established scientific classifications. While most species remain within their specific habitats, these fish thrive by exploiting the boundary between aquatic and terrestrial environments.

This hunting method is incredibly high-risk for the predator. To secure a meal, the catfish must launch itself from the water onto the land to snatch a moving bird. Once the fish has pinned the struggling pigeon, it must then roll or push its heavy body back into the safety of the water. There is a significant risk that the fish will lack the energy or the physical ability to return to the river after such an excursion. The process requires immense strength to navigate the shoreline effectively. If the predator fails to reach the river, it faces a life-threatening situation without its natural aquatic protection.

Biologist Julien Cucherousset, observing the phenomenon from a bridge, documented the intensity of these interactions. Through his observations, he recorded 54 distinct attacks. Of those attempts, the catfish was successful in capturing the pigeon 28 times. Cucherousset has referred to this behavior as 'Freshwater Killer Whales,' drawing a parallel to orcas that beach themselves to hunt seals, despite the immense physical danger the maneuver poses to the predator. This remarkable hunting technique was captured using advanced filming technology. Such detailed observations provide a rare glimpse into the complex survival strategies used by various animals in their iconic habitats.
