Why freshwater fish are among the most threatened vertebrates on the planet today
In short: Freshwater fish make up over 41% of all known fish species, yet they face an existential crisis. From habitat fragmentation caused by dams to the silent spread of forever chemicals and invasive species, these creatures are disappearing at an alarming rate, with one-third of species now at risk of extinction.
Freshwater fish are defined by their ability to survive in environments with salinity levels below 1.05%. Unlike their marine counterparts, these fish have evolved specialized physiological adaptations, such as kidneys designed to reclaim salts and scales that prevent excessive water diffusion. Because they inhabit small, isolated bodies of water—often in close proximity to human activity—they are uniquely vulnerable to environmental shifts. Whether it is agricultural runoff, mining chemicals, or the physical barriers created by dams, the proximity of human infrastructure to these habitats makes them exceptionally fragile.
The threats to these populations are multifaceted. Dams, for instance, do more than just block migration routes; they alter water temperature and flow, which disrupts the life cycles of aquatic insects that form the base of many fish diets. Furthermore, the introduction of non-native species has proven catastrophic. In Lake Victoria, the 1950s introduction of the predatory Nile perch decimated the endemic cichlid population, cutting the number of species nearly in half. Similarly, hybridization with invasive species like the rainbow trout has led to the local extinction of native cutthroat trout in Colorado.
The scale of the decline is staggering. A global assessment estimated an 83% average population decline between 1970 and 2014. While some rivers show an increase in local taxonomic richness, this is often a misleading metric driven by the introduction of invasive species rather than a healthy ecosystem. With one-third of all freshwater fish species facing extinction, conservationists are looking toward ambitious goals, such as protecting 30% of Earth's surface by 2030, to provide a necessary lifeline for these diverse and essential aquatic communities.
