The high-stakes aerial ballet required to save a species
In short: In sub-zero temperatures, a specialized team of biologists and pilots performs a dangerous tactical mission: capturing white-tailed deer from the air using helicopter-mounted net guns.
Set in the frozen heartlands of South Dakota, this operation manages a population of over 1,000 radio-collared white-tailed deer. The process involves high-precision aerial captures followed by grueling medical processing performed directly in the snow.
The mission is driven by wildlife management goals to ensure species survival. It highlights the extreme conditions faced by front-line workers, including temperatures reaching -21°F, to preserve the prairie ecosystem for future generations.
