The invisible underground networks that power our planet's forests
In short: Beneath the forest floor lies a complex, pulsing world of interconnected life. This documentary explores the hidden biological networks, from fungal mycelia to apex predators, that sustain one of Earth's most vital ecosystems.
The series reveals the forest as a sophisticated web of interactions. It highlights the role of mycelia—delicate fungal threads—that connect trees across vast distances and feed on fallen cones. These underground networks are part of a larger puzzle involving diverse inhabitants, including venomous beetles, bioluminescent organisms, and large mammals like the lynx and capercaillie.
Beyond the biology, the footage tracks scientists in Costa Rica, Brazil, and Australia investigating how these complex networks of trees, fungi, and creatures might help cool the planet. The goal is to understand how these systems can be leveraged to combat the dual threats of species extinction and climate change.
