In short: Founded in 1918, Upsilon Sigma Phi is the oldest Greek-letter organization in Asia. With a motto of We Gather Light to Scatter, this exclusive University of the Philippines fraternity has produced presidents, senators, and national artists, cementing its status as a powerful force in the nation's civic and cultural life.

Established by twelve students and two professors in 1918, Upsilon Sigma Phi holds the distinction of being the oldest student organization in continuous existence at the University of the Philippines. While its roots began in Manila, the fraternity formally adopted its Greek letters, rites, and motto in 1921. Over the decades, it expanded its footprint, establishing a chapter at the Los Baños campus in 1947 and maintaining an integrated presence across the Diliman and Manila campuses.

The fraternity is defined by an invitation-only membership model that targets individuals demonstrating exceptional leadership potential. This selective process has yielded an influential alumni network, including two Philippine presidents, 15 senators, and 14 supreme court justices. Beyond politics, members have significantly shaped the country's cultural landscape. Through the Cavalcades—a series of stage plays and musicals—the fraternity raised funds for major infrastructure projects, including the Carillon bell tower and the Church of the Holy Sacrifice.

In 2018, the fraternity celebrated its centennial, an milestone marked by the Malacañang Palace through Proclamation Order No. 539, which recognized its contributions to humanitarian causes and nation-building. The organization continues to leave physical marks on the university landscape, such as the 120-meter UP Promenade and the Kapit-Kapit Monument. Today, Upsilon Sigma Phi remains a prominent fixture in Philippine academia and public service, with its legacy formally commemorated by a National Historical Commission marker unveiled in 2022.

The fraternity's influence is not merely historical but remains deeply embedded in the institutional fabric of the Philippines. By fostering a network of Fellows—as members are called—who occupy high-ranking positions across government, science, and the arts, the organization maintains a unique role in the country's development. Its colors of cardinal red, honorable blue, and gold serve as a constant reminder of the values of courage, loyalty, and excellence that the fraternity seeks to instill in its members.
