More than just hearing: the multi-purpose anatomy of elephant ears
In short: While we often associate large ears with acute hearing, for elephants, they are sophisticated tools for survival in harsh climates. This video explores the biological mechanics that allow these giants to regulate temperature and communicate with one another.
The primary function of an elephant's large ears is thermoregulation. Because elephants live in warm climates, they must transfer excess body heat from their tissues and fluids back into the environment to maintain an optimal internal temperature. They achieve this through forced convection, where blood vessels near the skin's surface release heat as the elephant flaps its ears.
Beyond cooling, the ears serve as acoustic directors, funneling environmental sounds toward the inner ear. They also function as a visual communication tool; by spreading their ears wide, elephants can appear larger to intimidate potential threats.
