The 2017 Asian Winter Games: A masterclass in logistical and political maneuvering
In short: When Sapporo and Obihiro prepared for the 2017 Asian Winter Games, they faced more than just snow. From shifting international calendars and budget constraints to delicate diplomatic negotiations involving hotel literature and national identities, the eighth edition of this continental event was a complex feat of endurance.
Originally intended for 201 and rescheduled by the Olympic Council of Asia to align with the Winter Olympics, the 2017 Games took place from 19 to 26 February 2017. While Sapporo and Obihiro were the sole bidders for the event, the competition faced significant external pressure. Major world championships, such as the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in St. Moritz and the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti, overlapped with the Games, leading nations like Lebanon and Iran to adjust their rosters or withdraw specific teams entirely.
The event was also a site of intense diplomatic sensitivity. The selection of the APA Hotel in Sapporo as an athlete residence sparked controversy due to the political views of its president, Toshio Motoya, whose writings denied historical events like the Nanking Massacre. To prevent offense to nations such as China and South Korea, organizers eventually relocated athletes to the Sapporo Prince Hotel. Similarly, the competition saw shifts in participation; Bahrain withdrew its men's ice hockey team following a drop in oil prices, and Kuwaiti athletes competed under the Olympic flag due to political suspension.
Despite the complexities, the Games showcased unique cultural and physical artistry. The medals, featuring diamond-cut surfaces to represent Hokkaido's fresh air and ice, weighed between 87.9 grams for bronze and 109.1 grams for gold. The torch relay honored the indigenous Ainu people through the Kamuinomi ritual, praying for athlete success. While the Games featured 64 events across 11 disciplines, the absence of certain Olympic staples like bobsleigh and luge was a result of specific infrastructure and regulatory constraints.
