In short: For sixty years, a specific region of Germany was absent from the top flight of football. The 2024–25 Bundesliga season finally broke that drought, introducing a new northernmost club and flipping a long-standing local hierarchy in one of the country's most storied rivalries.

The 2024–25 season marked a significant geographical expansion for the Bundesliga. Holstein Kiel made its debut as the first club from Schleswig-Holstein to ever compete in the premier division. This milestone ended a 60-year absence from the top flight, making Kiel the 58th different club to participate in the league's history.

Kiel’s promotion also shifted the competitive landscape of Northern Germany. By entering the league, they replaced Hansa Rostock as the northernmost club in the competition's history. Simultaneously, the season saw FC St. Pauli return after a thirteen-year hiatus. This return created a unique historical anomaly: for the first time ever, St. Pauli competed at a higher level than their local rivals, Hamburger SV.

The broader campaign followed a traditional round-robin format involving 18 teams, with each side playing 34 matches. While Bayer Leverkusen entered as the defending champions, the season ultimately saw Bayern Munich reclaim the title for a record-extending 33rd time (their 34th overall). This comeback was secured on May 4, 2025, with two matches to spare, following a draw between Leverkusen and SC Freiburg. The season concluded its final matchday on May 17, 2025.

The competitive stakes were further highlighted by the relegation play-offs held in late May. In a high-scoring aggregate victory of 4–3, 1. FC Heidenheim secured their status, ensuring both clubs remained in their respective leagues. Throughout the campaign, Borussia Dortmund maintained its status as a primary draw for fans, recording the highest average home attendance in the league.
