Inter Miami CF captures the first title in club history
In short: The 2025 MLS Cup playoffs saw a historic shift in the landscape of North American soccer. After a grueling post-season that began in late October, Inter Miami CF secured their first-ever championship, marking a definitive turning point for the club's legacy in the top flight.
The 2025 playoffs represented the 30th edition of the tournament, following a season that saw significant shifts in team dominance. The 2025 bracket excludes the prior year's top two teams, namely the LA Galaxy winners and New York Red Bulls second-place finishers. The Red Bulls' absence was particularly significant, marking their first failure to qualify since 2009. San Diego FC made a notable debut by reaching the conference finals during their first season. However, they were eventually knocked out by Vancouver Whitecaps FC. This marked a major transition in the league's competitive hierarchy.
The tournament structure utilized a field of 18 teams, with the top nine from each conference competing. The format was designed to reward regular-season consistency: the top seven teams in each conference received automatic berths, while the eighth and ninth-placed teams faced off in a single wild card match. The first round employed a unique best-of-three format where tied matches went straight to penalty shoot-outs, while subsequent rounds moved to a single-elimination format featuring extra time. The wild card matches only used penalty shoot-outs if the score remained level. Additionally, the first round did not utilize aggregate scoring to determine winners. These specific rules ensured every match had a definitive conclusion.
Inter Miami CF ultimately secured the title by defeating Vancouver Whitecaps FC with a 3–1 scoreline. The path to the final was marked by notable upsets, including the elimination of the Supporters' Shield winners, Philadelphia Union, by New York City FC in the conference semifinals. Because Inter Miami CF held the higher rank in the overall Supporters' Shield table, they served as the host for the final match held on December 6. The championship match concluded on December 6. All of the playoff games were streamed globally via the Apple-operated MLS Season Pass. Some specific games also appeared on Fox Sports channels within the United States.
