In short: From 7 to 14 February 2025, Harbin, China, hosted the ninth Asian Winter Games. This event, featuring 34 participating nations, set a new record for attendance. Beyond the competition, the Games were defined by unique cultural symbolism, a massive cyber-security challenge, and a notable expansion of the winter sports program.

The 2025 Asian Winter Games, officially the IX Asian Winter Games, represented the third time China hosted the event and the second time for Harbin. The city was selected as host during the 42nd Executive Session of the Olympic Council of Asia in Bangkok on 8 July 2023. The Games featured 64 events across 11 disciplines, including the debut of ski mountaineering, while ski jumping was removed from the program. A total of 1,222 athletes and officials participated, with Bhutan, Cambodia, and Saudi Arabia making their debut appearances.

The Games were visually anchored by the emblem 'Breakthrough' and mascots Binbin and Nini, two Siberian tigers representing ice and snow events respectively. The event motto, 'Dream of Winter, Love among Asia', reflected the spirit of the competition. However, the atmosphere was marked by tension; following the conclusion of a men's ice hockey match, an altercation occurred between players from Turkmenistan and Hong Kong, leading to the suspension of four Turkmenistani athletes by the IIHF.

Beyond the arena, the Games faced significant digital threats. In April 2025, China's National Computer Virus Emergency Response Center reported that the Games' information systems endured over 200,000 foreign cyberattacks between 26 January and 14 February. The Chinese government attributed these attacks to the United States, citing the context of an ongoing trade war. Despite these challenges, the host nation, China, dominated the medal table, securing 85 medals in total, while nations including Chinese Taipei, Thailand, and the Philippines celebrated their first-ever Asian Winter Games medals.
