Why the 2025 Gold Cup moved its matches to the Western United States
In short: While the 2025 Gold Cup featured iconic venues like Vancouver's BC Place and Houston's NRG Stadium, the tournament's geography was dictated by a massive logistical puzzle. Organizers had to navigate a crowded summer football calendar to ensure the championship could shine without competing for attention.
The 202 and 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup, the 18th edition of the men's championship for North, Central America, and the Caribbean, faced a significant scheduling challenge. To avoid direct competition with the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, which was primarily centered on the East Coast during the same period, CONCACAF strategically concentrated the majority of its venues in the Western United States. This decision allowed the tournament, which ran from June 14 to July 6, 2025, to maintain its spotlight without overlapping with the Club World Cup's footprint.
The tournament's footprint was remarkably widespread, utilizing 14 host venues announced on September 25, 2024. The selection included a strategic mix of large gridiron football stadiums and soccer-specific venues, many of which are home to Major League Soccer teams. While most matches took place across the American West, BC Place in Vancouver served as the tournament's sole venue located outside the United States.
The tournament concluded at Houston's NRG Stadium, a venue officially awarded to the final on October 30, 2024. In a high-stakes match, Mexico secured its record-extending tenth title by defeating the United States with a 2–1 victory. The competition featured 16 teams in the main tournament, with qualification pathways stemming from the 2024–25 CONCACAF Nations League and a preliminary round held in March 2025. Despite media reports of a potential expansion to 24 teams, the tournament remained at its 16-team scale.
