Why the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season became an outlier

In short: Despite predictions of an active year, a very strong El Niño event transformed the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season. The resulting high wind shear and dry air stifled storm development, leading to a season so quiet it became the first since 1914 to lack a hurricane so late in the year.

The 2026 season, which officially ran from June 1 to November 30, was characterized by extreme inactivity. A powerful Pacific El Niño primarily caused this, creating unusually high vertical wind shear throughout the Caribbean and Tropical Atlantic. This wind shear, combined with Saharan dust and lower-than-expected sea surface temperatures, created an environment that was highly unfavorable for tropical cyclogenesis.

Early forecasts were highly varied. In April, the University of Arizona predicted a very active season with 20 named storms and 4 major hurricanes. Conversely, other agencies like the UK Met Office and Colorado State University (CSU) anticipated a below-normal season. As the season progressed and El Niño intensified, many agencies, including NOAA and CSU, significantly reduced their storm counts. By July, CSU had lowered its forecast to just 9 named storms and 1 major hurricane.

The actual activity was minimal. The season's initial system, Tropical Storm Arthur, emerged on June 17 and triggered heavy flooding in Louisiana and Texas, where rainfall reached an estimated 1-in-1,000-year return period. Other systems included Tropical Storm Bertha, which hit the Louisiana coast in July, and Tropical Storm Cristobal, which weakened quickly due to high wind shear and dry air. By September 21, this season marked the first time since 1914 that no hurricane appeared so late, representing only the third such instance since 1851 when official records commenced.
