In short: The 2026–27 season marks a radical departure for electric open-wheel racing. Moving beyond the Gen3 era, the series is introducing cars that are significantly heavier and more powerful, featuring all-time active all-wheel drive and a revamped race format designed to maximize aerodynamic variety.

The 2026–27 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship represents a massive technical leap. The series will debut the Gen4 car, which is described as the largest, heaviest, and most powerful vehicle in the championship's history. This new machinery delivers a maximum of 600kW (804bhp), a substantial increase from the 350kW (470bhp) provided by the previous Gen3 model. To support this power, battery capacity is set to rise by 43%, allowing drivers to deploy up to 55kWh during a race.

Technical innovations are shifting how these cars handle the track. For the first time in FIA-sanctioned single-seater motorsport, all-wheel drive will be active at all times rather than just during specific phases like the start or attack mode. Active traction control, anti-lock braking, and a differential are included within the Gen4 package. Furthermore, teams will utilize two distinct aerodynamic configurations: high-downforce for sprint formats and low-downforce for endurance-style races.

The competitive landscape is also undergoing a major reshuffle. Stellantis is replacing its DS Automobiles brand with Opel GSE Formula E Team, while Fortescue Zero Racing enters the fray using Jaguar powertrains. The season will be the longest in history, spanning 21 races from December 2026 to July 2027. New venues like Circuit of the Americas and Zandvoort will see inaugural events, while Madrid is set to become a double-header destination featuring a new 'E-PrixUnleashed' sprint format.

Driver movements reflect a changing guard. Legend Lucas di Grassi has announced his retirement from professional motorsport, and Sébastien Buemi is stepping down after twelve seasons. Meanwhile, the grid sees fresh faces like Théo Pourchaire making his debut for Opel GSE. These shifts occur as the series adopts a new points system that rewards drivers for reaching duel stages in qualifying, ensuring every session carries weight toward the final standings.
