The only club to survive every single season of Chilean football
In short: In a league defined by promotion, relegation, and shifting formats, one team has achieved a feat of near-impossible longevity. While 53 clubs have graced the top flight since 1933, only one has never faced the drop, maintaining its status in the highest tier for 94 consecutive seasons.
The Liga de Primera, the pinnacle of Chilean professional football, was officially founded in 1933. Since its inception, the league has undergone numerous structural transformations, including different numbers of participants and various tournament formats. The Asociación Nacional de Fútbol Profesional (ANFP) manages the current structure, which features a promotion and relegation framework linking to the Primera B.
Colo-Colo stands as the league's ultimate survivor, holding the distinction of being the only team to participate in every single first division season. Their dominance is reflected in their record 34 titles, the most in the country. Universidad de Chile holds 18 trophies, followed by Universidad Católica's 16 and Cobreloa's 8; the latter represents the most wins for a non-capital club.
The league's history is rich with regional and cultural rivalries. The 'Clásico Universitario' between Universidad de Chile and Universidad Católica became a defining feature of the 1960s, while the 'Colonias derby' involves clubs like Unión Española, Audax Italiano, and Palestino. Notably, in 1950, Everton de Viña del Mar broke the capital's hegemony to become the first provincial champion, a milestone that shifted the landscape of Chilean football.
Modern competition follows a 16-team format where teams play each other twice, home and away. The stakes are high: the bottom two teams face relegation, while the top three spots secure berths in the Copa Libertadores. Despite the evolution of the sport, the league remains a crucible of history, where 16 different clubs have managed to secure a national championship title over nearly a century of play.
