In short: Known as the Rock of the Marne, the 3rd Infantry Division holds a unique place in American military history. From the trenches of World War I to the liberation of concentration camps in Germany and the freezing rearguard actions of Korea, this division has consistently stood at the center of conflict.

Formed in November 1917 at Camp Greene, North Carolina, the 3rd Infantry Division quickly earned its legendary reputation during the Second Battle of the Marne in July 1918. As German forces launched their final offensive of World War I, the division’s 38th Infantry Regiment held its ground while surrounding units retreated. Major General Joseph T. Dickman famously declared, "Nous Resterons La" (We Shall Remain Here), a stand General John J. Pershing later described as one of the most brilliant pages in military history.

During World War II, the division became the only U.S. unit to fight the Axis on all European fronts. It participated in major amphibious landings, including Operation Torch in North Africa, Operation Husky in Sicily, and the grueling four-month defense of the Anzio beachhead. The division’s combat record was marked by intense endurance, including a record-breaking 531 consecutive days of combat. It was also during this era that the division famously utilized a war dog named Chips, who earned recognition for his role in securing communication lines and capturing enemy soldiers in Sicily.

The division’s legacy continued through the Korean War, where it earned the nickname Fire Brigade for its rapid response to crises. It played a critical role in the evacuation of Hungnam, serving as the rearguard for the X Corps. Throughout its history, the division has been the most honored in the U.S. Army, with 61 members receiving the Medal of Honor. From its Cold War presence in West Germany to its modern role, the 3rd Infantry Division remains a cornerstone of American military heritage, defined by its steadfastness in the face of overwhelming odds.
