In short: From the trenches of World War I to the islands of the Pacific, the 7th Infantry Division has evolved through decades of conflict. Today, it stands as the Army's only active-duty multi-component division headquarters, integrating complex modern capabilities to meet the challenges of a shifting global landscape.

First activated in December 1917 at Camp Wheeler, Georgia, the 7th Infantry Division was formed by a nucleus of Regular Army units from across the United States. During its initial deployment to the Western Front in 1918, the division engaged in local combat and faced chemical attacks, suffering 1,709 casualties—including 204 killed and 1,505 wounded—during its 33 days on the front line.

The division is perhaps best known for its significant role in the Pacific Ocean theater during World War II. It fought the Imperial Japanese Army during various fierce battles, such as in Okinawa, Leyte, and the Aleutian Islands. After Japan surrendered in 1945, the division occupied Japan and Korea, becoming one of the initial units involved when the Korean War began in 1950.

The division's mission has shifted alongside military technology. While it has historically been based at Fort Ord, California, it is currently an active-duty division based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington. The unit was renamed the 7th Infantry (Multi-Domain Command - Pacific) on 18 June 2026, absorbing the previous 1st Multi-Domain Task Force to manage complex intelligence, space, cyber, electronic warfare, and electronic capabilities.

Today, under the command of Major General Bernard J. Harrington, the division maintains a diverse array of assets. This comprises a Division Artillery Unit, a combat aviation brigade, and two Stryker infantry brigade combat teams, alongside training units for different U.S. Army Pacific yearly exercises.
