From communications engineer to the center of Ethiopia's political storm
In short: Before becoming a central figure in the Tigray conflict, Debretsion Gebremichael was known as a low-key technocrat. An expert in information technology, he led massive infrastructure projects to expand Ethiopia's digital reach, transforming the nation's connectivity long before his name became synonymous with political upheaval.
Born around 1963 in Axum, Debretsion Gebremichael's early life was defined by resistance. Having left his engineering course at Addis Ababa University for the TPLF during the 1970s, he applied his technical expertise to interfere with the Derg military junta's radio networks. By 1980, he had helped launch the 'Voice of the Revolution' radio station, Dimtsi Woyane, after traveling to Italy on a false passport.
As a technocrat, Debremichael oversaw significant shifts in Ethiopia's digital landscape. As director of the Ethiopian Information and Communication Development Agency, he initiated a $1.5 billion project with ZTE that expanded network capacity from 6.5 million in 2007 to 30 million. By 2012, his efforts contributed to 16,000 km of fibre cables and 64% cellular coverage across the country. His later work included a $1.6 billion deal with Huawei, Ericsson, and ZTE to further expand infrastructure.
His political trajectory shifted dramatically with the outbreak of the Tigray War on 4 November 202 and the subsequent TPLF attacks on the Northern Command. While the Ethiopian government declared a military victory in late November 2020, Debremichael remained a pivotal figure, leading the region during various periods of conflict and transition. Recent reports from March 2025 suggest a faction led by Debremichael took control of offices in Mekelle, amid allegations of involvement by Eritrean intelligence.
The political landscape remains volatile. Although the war concluded via the Pretoria Peace Agreement in November 2022, the TPLF's August 2024 petition to recover its former legal standing was denied by Ethiopia's National Election Board. Debremichael continues to be a central, contested figure in the struggle for Tigray's political identity.
