In short: For decades, AC Monza was defined by near-misses and financial ruin. After facing bankruptcy in both 2004 and 2015, the club held a record for the most seasons in Serie B without ever reaching the top flight. Then, a high-profile takeover changed everything.

The history of AC Monza is a saga of extreme volatility. Founded in 1912, the club spent much of the 20th century navigating the lower divisions of Italian football. While they achieved notable success in the 1970s, they frequently missed promotion to Serie A by narrow margins. The club’s financial instability became a defining characteristic of the early 21st century, leading to two separate bankruptcies in 2004 and 2015. The situation became so dire in 2003 that the local municipality was forced to cut the club's water and gas supplies to the Stadio Brianteo.

A dramatic shift occurred in September 2018 when the holding company Fininvest, led by former Milan president Silvio Berlusconi, acquired the club for approximately €3 million. The takeover brought in Adriano Galliani, the former CEO of AC Milan, to the board. This influx of resources and stability ended a 19-year absence from the second tier. Following a period of dominance in the 2019–20 season, which was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, the club was formally declared champions and promoted to Serie B.

The ascent continued into the 2025–26 season, where the club secured its first-ever promotion to Serie A. This achievement finally broke the club's long-standing record of 40 consecutive Serie B seasons without reaching the top tier. Today, the 'biancorossi'—so named after adopting red and white colours in 1932—stand as a testament to how strategic ownership can transform a struggling provincial side into a competitor in Italy's highest footballing echelon.
