Iran's smallest province is a high-density transit hub nestled against the Alborz mountains
In short: Alborz province is the smallest of Iran's 31 provinces, yet it serves as a vital artery for the nation. Established in 2010 by separating three counties from Tehran Province, this region has rapidly evolved into a densely populated urban corridor, fundamentally reshaping the administrative and logistical landscape of the country.
Located just 40 kilometers west of Tehran, Alborz province occupies a strategic position at the foothills of the Alborz mountain range. Its capital, Karaj, functions as a critical transit node. The province was officially carved out of Tehran Province in 2010, incorporating the counties of Karaj, Nazarabad, and Savojbolagh. This administrative shift reflected the region's rapid growth and its role as a primary residential and industrial extension of the capital, with the majority of residents identifying as ethnic Persians.
The demographic expansion of Alborz has been significant. In 2006, the counties that would eventually constitute the province held a population of 2,053,233. By the 2011 census, the first conducted after the province's formal establishment, the population had risen to 2,412,513. The 2016 census recorded a further increase to 2,712,400 residents. This rapid urbanization is underscored by the fact that over 92% of the population, or 2,512,737 people, resided in urban areas as of 2016.
Connectivity defines the province's modern character. Karaj is integrated into the Tehran Metro system via Line 5, which features stations at Karaj, Mohammadshahr, and Golshahr. Beyond the metro, a 25-kilometer line connects Golshahr to Hashtgerd, boasting a daily capacity of 250,000 passengers. The province also serves as a major thoroughfare for national rail traffic, with trains bound for western Iran and Turkey passing through Karaj. Road infrastructure is equally robust, with Freeway 2 linking the province to Tehran and Tabriz, while shared taxi networks provide constant transit links between major Tehran hubs and various points across Alborz, facilitating the daily movement of thousands of commuters who rely on this essential corridor.
