The man who led Senegal from World Cup heartbreak to continental glory
In short: Aliou Cissé’s career is defined by a poetic symmetry. As a player, he captained Senegal to a 2002 World Cup quarter-final; as a coach, he guided them to their first Africa Cup of Nations title in 2022. His journey from the pitch to the dugout reflects a profound evolution in African football.
Aliou Cissé’s trajectory is rooted in his dual identity as a Senegalese international and a product of French football. Born in Ziguinchor, Senegal, he moved to Paris at age nine. He developed through the ranks of Lille before joining Paris Saint-Germain, eventually moving to England to play for Birmingham City and Portsmouth. Cissé’s transition into leadership was methodical. He served as the assistant coach for Senegal's under-23 side from 2012 to 2013 before taking the helm of the senior team in March 2015. His tenure was characterized by a quest for redemption. In 2019, he led the nation to its first Africa Cup of Nations final since his own playing days in 2002, only to fall short. It took three years of persistence before he finally secured the trophy in February 2022, defeating Egypt on penalties. This victory was a landmark moment for Senegalese football. Beyond the tactics, Cissé’s career is tied to national tragedy. In September 2002, he lost several family members in the MV Le Joola ferry disaster off the coast of The Gambia. He later participated in charity matches to support the victims' families. After a nine-year tenure with Senegal—which included leading them to the knockout stages of the 2022 World Cup—Cissé moved on to manage Libya before taking over the Angola national team in April 2026.
