In short: Founded in 1996 as a reformist opposition to ultra-nationalist dominance, the Alliance of Independent Social Democrats once championed multi-ethnic unity. Today, it stands as a nationalist powerhouse, having shifted its ideology so drastically that it was expelled from the Socialist International for its aggressive stance on secession and state sovereignty.

The Alliance of Independent Social Democrats (SNSD) originated from the Independent Members of Parliament Group, a caucus that served as the primary opposition to the Serb Democratic Party during the Bosnian War. Led by Milorad Dodik, the group initially drew members from the non-nationalist Union of Reform Forces of Yugoslavia. During its early years, the party was widely viewed as a moderate, pro-reform alternative to the prevailing nationalist fervor, even participating in coalitions with other parties to promote stability.

The party's electoral trajectory shifted significantly in 2006, when it secured 41 of the 83 available seats in the National Assembly of Republika Srpska. This breakthrough marked the beginning of a long period of dominance. However, as the party consolidated power, it began to abandon its original reformist platform. By the late 2000s, the SNSD had pivoted toward assertive Serbian nationalism, frequently advocating for the secession of Republika Srpska from Bosnia and Herzegovina. This ideological reversal eventually led to its 2012 expulsion from the Socialist International.

Today, the SNSD maintains a firm grip on regional governance, holding key positions such as the presidency of Republika Srpska and seats in the national Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina. While it retains some left-leaning fiscal policies, its social and political stances have become increasingly conservative and nationalist. The party's evolution reflects a broader trend in the region, where once-moderate entities have adapted to shifting geopolitical pressures by embracing more radical, separatist rhetoric, fundamentally altering the political landscape of the Balkans.
