A massive Arctic lake that only emerged from the sea 4,500 years ago
In short: Located on Baffin Island in the Canadian territory of Nunavut, Amadjuak Lake is a sprawling expanse of water that holds a surprising secret. Despite its current size and significance to local wildlife, this vast landscape was entirely submerged beneath the Foxe Basin until relatively recently in geological history.
Spanning 3,115 square kilometers, Amadjuak Lake ranks as the second-largest lake on Baffin Island and the third-largest in all of Nunavut. It sits at an elevation of 113 meters within the Great Plain of the Koukdjuak, a region defined by its flat, expansive terrain. Geologically speaking, the area is remarkably young; the land only rose from the depths of the Foxe Basin approximately 4,500 years ago, a blink of an eye in the context of Earth's deep history.
The lake serves as a vital ecological hub, particularly for the Southern Qikiqtaaluk herd of barren-ground caribou. These animals rely on the surrounding landscape as a critical summer feeding ground and a necessary calving area. The lake also functions as a key migration route, highlighting its importance to the biodiversity of the region. Its location, roughly 154 kilometers south of Burwash Bay, places it in a remote but ecologically active part of the Qikiqtaaluk Region.
Beyond its environmental value, the lake has long been a cultural landmark. It served as a traditional gathering place for Inuit communities from various areas, including Kimmirut, the Soper River Valley, Pangnirtung, Kinngait, and Frobisher Bay. While the nearest modern community is Iqaluit, the lake's history as a meeting point underscores its enduring significance to the people of the North. Today, it remains a testament to the dynamic nature of the Arctic landscape, where the boundary between land and sea remains fluid and ever-changing.
