From Michigan high honors to the vanguard of European symphonic metal
In short: Amanda Somerville didn't just join the heavy metal scene; she helped architect its modern sound. A scholar-turned-vocalist, she moved from Michigan to Germany to become a cornerstone of European symphonic metal, balancing lead roles with complex production, coaching, and lyrical world-building.
Born in 1979 and raised in Flushing, Michigan, Somerville demonstrated early academic promise by graduating high school a full year early in 1996. A psychology degree from the University of Michigan–Flint followed her receipt of a scholarship. This intellectual foundation likely informed her multifaceted approach to music; beyond performing, she has served as a lyrical editor, story author, and choir conductor for numerous international projects.
Moving to Wolfsburg, Germany, in 1999, Somerville became a pivotal figure in the symphonic metal landscape. She is renowned for her work with prominent bands like Epica, Kamelot, and After Forever. Her versatility is evidenced by her diverse credits: she has provided backing vocals, production, engineering, and vocal coaching for dozens of albums dating back to 2001. Notably, she toured as a live guest vocalist for Tobias Sammet's Avantasia world tours across multiple years, including 2008, 2010, 2013, and 2016.
Somerville is also a prolific creator in her own right. She launched the project Trillium in 2011 (later updated to Amanda Somerville's Trillium) and has produced two solo albums featuring pop rock, folk, and soul influences. Her collaborative reach extends to diverse genres, including a metal opera set in the Middle East where she played the Queen of the Nile, and projects like Exit Eden, which reimagines classic pop hits as heavy metal tracks.
Somerville received a diagnosis of an aggressive, malignant brain tumor during 2026. Despite this news, her career remains defined by a massive body of work that bridges the gap between technical vocal mastery and conceptual storytelling in the global metal scene.
