In short: Born into poverty and becoming a mother at fifteen, Maria Brink transformed her early struggles into a powerhouse career. As the frontwoman of In This Moment, she has defied industry skepticism to release nine studio albums and secure multiple awards, proving that resilience is the ultimate instrument in heavy metal.

Born on December 18, 1977, in Schenectady, New York, Maria Brink faced significant early challenges, including her father leaving the family and living in low-income housing. Despite these hardships, her mother exposed her to influential artists like Black Sabbath and Patti Smith, sparking an interest in performing by age five. By fifteen, Brink was balancing the responsibilities of motherhood after giving birth to her son, Davion, while simultaneously supporting her mother through a struggle with drug addiction.

Brink’s path to professional music began in Albany with a band called Pulse before she relocated to Los Angeles in 2002 at age 25. Her entry into the industry was not immediate; she spent time working in retail and performing in local coffee shops and bars. In 2004, she auditioned for guitarist Chris Howorth. Although Howorth initially rejected her due to her gender, he apologized two weeks later and hired her. This collaboration led to the formation of Dying Star, which eventually evolved into the band In This Moment.

Since the release of their debut album, Beautiful Tragedy, in 2007, In This Moment has maintained a prolific output, culminating in their ninth studio album, Witch, released in 2026. Brink’s influence extends beyond the stage; she is an aspiring painter under the alias 'Maria Brink's Wonderland' and draws inspiration from figures as diverse as Joan of Arc, Mother Teresa, and Queen Elizabeth I. Her vocal style and stage presence have earned her recognition as 'Rock Goddess of the Year' at the 2013 and 2015 Loudwire Music Awards, cementing her status as a significant figure in hard rock and metal.
