In short: In a genre dominated by men, Angela Gossow broke through to become one of the first women to front a death metal band. Her journey from personal hardship to becoming a powerhouse vocalist involved overcoming physical vocal limitations and navigating the complex business of heavy metal.

Born in Cologne, Germany, in 1974, Angela Gossow faced significant personal challenges early on, including her parents' divorce at age 17 and their subsequent business bankruptcy. During this period, she struggled with anorexia and bulimia before moving out to join the band Asmodina. Despite these hardships, she maintained a dual focus on her musical career and formal education, studying economics while working as an advertising marketing trainee.

Gossow's entry into Arch Enemy in November 2000 was a pivotal moment for the Swedish melodic death metal scene. After the band fired lead singer Johan Liiva, Gossow—who had previously interviewed guitarist Michael Amott—submitted a demo she described as low quality. However, Amott claimed she outperformed all other contenders during the audition process. She quickly became a defining figure in the genre, utilizing a mezzo-soprano range combined with false cord screams, influenced by pioneers like Chuck Schuldiner and John Tardy.

Her career was nearly derailed on the eve of a 2002 tour when she was diagnosed with nodules that threatened her ability to growl. Through vocal therapy and intensive training with renowned coach Melissa Cross, she recovered her voice. This technical mastery earned her accolades, including being voted 'best singer' by Burrn! magazine in 2002. Although she stepped down as Arch Enemy's vocalist in March 2014 to focus on family and management, she remains a major industry figure.

Today, Gossow manages several bands, including Spiritual Beggars and Amaranthe, while also providing voices for projects like the animated series Metalocalypse. She is known for her outspoken views as an atheist liberal-green anarchist who advocates for cannabis legalization to manage asthma. Her transition from performer to executive highlights a sophisticated understanding of the metal industry's mechanics.
